Back in the early twentieth century, a young composer by the name of W.C Handy was busy creating Blues with seminal songs such as St Louis Blues, made into a smash hit by Bessie Smith. At around the same time, a young cornet player by the name of Louis Armstrong was setting about redefining jazz/5(82).

This "tribute" album to the master composer of the blues: W.C Handy features the All Stars in full flow. I am really a Hot Fives / Hot Sevens fan, and can give Armstrong's "middle career of the thirties and forties" a miss, but he seemed to come alive again with the advent of the AllStars/5(79).

Nice early LP from Louis Armstrong. Here, the jazz veteran pays tribute to the songs of W.C. Handy, and indispensable figure in the development of American blues and jazz. While these performances aren't teeming with excitement, they are lovingly played by Armstrong and his group.
  • Arasar says:
This recording was not only Louis Armstrong's finest record of the s but one of the truly classic jazz sets. Armstrong and his All-Stars (trombonist Trummy Young, clarinetist Barney Bigard, pianist Billy Kyle, bassist Arvell Shaw, drummer Barrett Deems, and singer Velma Middleton) were clearly inspired by the fresh repertoire, 11 songs written by W.C. Handy.
